In this case, we cannot tell what Ps.-Hecataeus means by “administering public affairs” and how that relates to service in the temple, and scholarly guesses on numbers of priests in various capacities at various epochs are of limited comparative value; see Jeremias 1969: 199-206; Bar-Kochva 1996a: 160.
