44 Greek φράσας χαίρειν. In some contexts, the verb χαίρω (“rejoice”) can mean “put out of mind” or “disregard.” It was also the common Greek term of greeting, as in § 217 below. Among the closest parallels to Josephus’ phrase is Aristophanes, Nub. 609, where it means essentially “say hello.” Josephus’ usage is obviously sarcastic.
